Repeat steps 3 and 4 for all of the usb root hubs on the computer.

Under preferred plan click the change plan settings link for the plan you re currently using. Under the power tab you can see the power output for that usb port. For the notebook computer in our example there is only a balanced setting. Click on ok to save your changes. Click on power options. Click change advanced power settings then scroll down to usb settings and click the little plus next to usb selective suspend setting to expand the options.

Depending on your computer you may see several preset plan settings balanced power saving performance etc. Under the power management tab you will see the option for restricting power to the usb port to save battery power. Click the power management tab. Right click on the usb root hub you want to change and then click on properties to open the usb port s properties dialog box.

Choose your desired settings using the checkboxes and then click on ok to save these settings. Repeat this process for each usb port hub you want to change. The operating system microsoft windows 7 allows the computer to shut off power to usb devices to save power. Click change advanced power settings.

If you want to enable windows vista to turn off the usb root hub when the computer is running on battery power click enabled in the on battery list.
